ANNOUNCEMENT: Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Announces
Honors Scholar and Emerging Honors Scholar of the Year Award Recipients

Richmond, VA, April 9, 2022 – The Virginias Collegiate Honors Council (VCHC) is pleased to again offer the VCHC Honors Scholar of the Year and Emerging Honors Scholar of the Year awards to our best and brightest undergraduate honors students in Virginia and West Virginia. The Honors Scholar of the Year and Emerging Honors Scholar of the Year are awarded to students who successfully embody the scholarship, character, and ambition associated historically with honors students in the Virginias Collegiate Honors Council.

The 2022 winners are Steven Davic of James Madison University (Honors Scholar of the Year) and Kameron Jones of Virginia Commonwealth University (Emerging Scholar of the Year).  The VCHC is grateful to have Steven Davic and Kameron Jones studying in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The selection committee judged their personal essays exceptional, and letters of support superior in their detailed account of academic and co-curricular accomplishments.

Steven Davic was nominated by Dr. Fawn-Amber Montoya, Associate Dean, James Madison University Honors College.  As Dr. Montoya states in her letter, “Steven…illustrates how Honors students can embrace their diverse backgrounds and focus on facing unique challenges in the future.  While Steven’s work is impressive, he is humble about these accomplishments and sees himself as a servant leader. In many ways, his work at JMU continues his military service and illustrates his lifelong commitment to his brothers in arms.”

Kameron Jones was nominated by Dr. Scott Breuninger, Dean Virginia Commonwealth University Honors College.  “Kameron is an exceptional student, who has distinguished herself from her peers both in the classroom and as part of the Honors community.” says Dean Breuninger. “Her work demonstrates tremendous potential for future growth. Not only is she an excellent thinker, but Kameron is also reliable, friendly, and innovative: in short, she is one of those people who brings a great deal of energy and academic rigor to all her endeavors. Kameron’s creative problem-solving, enthusiasm, leadership, and commitment to helping others has created valuable connections of support in a time where support, care, and connection are much needed. Service to others is of great importance to this outstanding scholar. She is already making a positive difference in the lives of others and she will be an asset to her community colleagues, future patients, and their families.”

Awardees of these scholarships receive – courtesy of the VCHC – registration at the annual conference, a $500 cash prize, and the recipient will also have the opportunity to address their peers at the VCHC meeting, where they will have an opportunity to receive further acknowledgement and speak about being a part of an honors community and what that means to them.

The VCHC also wishes to recognize all Honors Scholar and Emerging Scholar nominees and their institutions.
